Introduction

Jinshanling is a section of Great Wall and is located in the mountainous area in Luanping County, 125 km northeast of Beijing. Jinshanling is connected with the Simatai to the east and lies west of Mutianyu Great Wall. Jinshanling was built in 1570 during the Ming Dynasty.

It is about 20 km long a bit smaller and narrower than Badaling and Mutianyu Great Wall with complicated structures. It is well preserved and makes harmony with the fantastic natural scenery, connecting Simatai Great Wall to the east. The slight ruins of Jinshanling added special beauty. The Wall is 7.8 m high and 5-6m thick at the bottom. On the top, the wall is about 4 meters wide with 2 meters high parapets on each side. In addition, there are ‘obstacle-walls’ built perpendicular to the parapets – a feature quite unique to JinShanLing Great Wall. These “walls-within-walls” were used for defense against enemies who might have succeeded in scaling the wall. The Wangjinglou Tower, the General Tower, the Black Tower and the Taochun Tower are also must-sees on the Jinshanling Great Wall.
